Thomann-Hanry® were commissioned to bring their full breadth of skills to the task of rejuvenating both the interior and exterior of this historic building.

To receive more visitors, Thomann-Hanry® were instructed to create two new doorways from windows flanking the main entrance. The new surrounds were to match the original in every detail, including ornate corbels and large projecting heads. Mouldings were taken on site and used for the production of accurate working drawings and the new Portland stone sections. Lifted into place using traditional Lewis pins and pulley hoists, the stonework matched the adjacent original stone beautifully and was blended in after erection by a clean to the ground floor of the front façade using Thomann-Hanry®’s scaffold-free façade gommage® system.

Thomann-Hanry®’s Specialist Stone Care team has restored the interior of this impressive building for many years. Kevin Hooper, who runs our interior stonework division, has over 30 years’ experience and is recognised as London’s leading expert in the cleaning, protection and restoration of interior natural stone.

As well as general maintenance, works at The Wellcome Trust included the restoration of its stunning staircase, which forms a centrepiece to the interior of the building.
