A clean study of Arundel House

Originally on the site of Bath Inn which had been built in the Middle Ages as the home for the Bishops of Bath & Wells; later, the site, the first Arundel House, was purchased for £40 in 1550 by Henry Fitz Alan, 12th Earl of Arundel.
During the late 19th Century, the current Arundel House was built in the popular Tudor Revival style as a reaction to the ornate Victorian Gothic Revival of the second half of the 19th century. It is headquarters to the defence and security think-tank, the International Institute for Strategic Studies and a conference centre.
This study of how Thomann-Hanry® was able to best bring the building back to its impressive original through a detailed façade survey and cleaning utilising façade gommage which allowed for quick and scaffold-free cleaning experience.
Façade check and survey
Thomann-Hanry® was instructed to carry out a detailed façade survey to best understand the key areas of concern which would need to be rectified as part of the ongoing maintenance and management programme. A fully detailed and illustrated report was subsequently delivered to the client which could be used to inform future maintenance plans.
The façade cleaning begins
The red-brick and Bath stone façade had not been cleaned for many years and needed a thorough and sensitive façade clean. Using Thomann-Hanry®’s façade gommage cleaning system, the job was able to be completed in just 6 days and all without the need for intrusive, expensive, and unsightly scaffolding. This is one of the reasons why multi award winning Thomann-Hanry® has gained the reputation of being the façade experts for historic and commercial properties.
The low pressure, water-free, chemical-free, aggregate-free cleaning solution offers both historical and commercial buildings a way to revive and refresh a building’s façade without the worry of structural or material damage. The gentle cleaning process was the perfect solution to clean both the intricate details and surface, across the different substrate types.
Façade protection
From the basement to the former servants’ quarters in the Attic, Thomann-Hanry® was able to meticulously clean to peel back the years to help reveal the original façade as it would have been envisioned by the Victorian architects. As part of the long-term protection of the building’s façade, an application of AquaFEND F was applied to help reduce surface soiling and biofilm growth.
